Power Lines

checklistWhat Every Consumer Must Know

Do's & Don'ts for Every Consumer

These simple rules can prevent the majority of consumer-caused DT failures in Kashmir. Share them with your family and neighbours.

Always Do These
Responsible actions protect your entire community's power supply

Apply for a legal connection through KPDCL for any new or additional electricity requirement — never hook up directly from a line.

Inform KPDCL before installing high-load appliances such as ACs, geysers, motors, or welding machines so the load on your DT can be planned.

Report warning signs immediately — oil dripping, unusual buzzing or humming, sparking, or unexplained tripping. Call 1800 1807 666 without delay.

Keep the area around the DT clear. No storage of materials, no construction, and no encroachments within the safety zone of the transformer compound.

Educate your children about the dangers of playing near transformers and power lines, and the serious risk of flying kites near electrical infrastructure.

Report suspicious activity near the DT — especially at night — that could indicate theft of oil or components. You can report confidentially to KPDCL.

Trim trees on your property that overhang or could fall onto power lines or transformers during snowfall or storms.

Never Do These
These actions cause community-wide outages and are criminal offences

Never make an illegal connection (Kundi) from a power line or transformer. It is a criminal offence and silently overloads the DT for every legitimate consumer.

Never fly kites near power lines or transformers. Kite strings — especially metallic or wet strings — can cause a short circuit that instantly destroys the transformer and is fatal to the kite flyer.

Never drain, steal, or tamper with transformer oil. A DT without oil fails within hours. This is a criminal offence attracting up to 5 years imprisonment.

Never steal copper windings, bushings, or any component from a transformer or from any part of the power network.

Never throw stones or objects at transformers, insulators, or power lines. Even minor physical damage causes dangerous faults and costly failures.

Never build structures or store materials within the safety clearance zone of a transformer or under/near overhead power lines.

Never bypass or tamper with meters, fuses, or MCBs. These protect your DT — removing them takes away its last line of defence against overload.
